Taste and See: building the new Jerusalem

Francis Lateran

At the beginning of Mass on Sunday, the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the Church prayed for her renewal and completion.

O God, who from living and chosen stones
prepare an eternal dwelling for your majesty,
increase in your Church the spirit of grace you have bestowed,
so that by new growth your faithful people
may build up the heavenly Jerusalem.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

  • What is the new growth that you and yours need for their mission?
  • What steps can be taken to help that new growth?
  • And to hold at bay things which would degrade the heavenly city?

It was to the basilica of John Lateran that St Francis came to seek approval of his Rule. He had previously been seen in a vision upholding a toppling church. The upholding and renewal of the Church remains a constant need, and all have a part to play. Photograph (c) Allen Morris, 2010.
